The Solfeggio Frequencies and 528 Hz: Where They Actually Come From

The claim

You will see the same list almost everywhere: nine frequencies — 174, 285, 396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852 and 963 Hz — described as the Solfeggio frequencies, an ancient six- or nine-tone scale used in Gregorian chant, lost for centuries and rediscovered in modern times. 528 Hz usually gets top billing as the "love frequency" or the "DNA repair frequency".

Each part of that description can be checked against the record. Most of it does not survive the check — but the real story is more interesting than the marketing version, so it is worth going through carefully.

What solfège actually was

The syllables ut, re, mi, fa, sol, la come from Guido of Arezzo, a Benedictine monk working around 1025. He took them from the first syllables of successive lines of the hymn Ut queant laxis, where each line happens to begin one step higher than the last. It was a teaching device — a way of getting singers to internalise the intervals of a scale so they could read music they had never heard.

That is the crucial point: solfège names relative positions in a scale, not absolute pitches. "Mi" is not a frequency. It is the third degree of whatever scale you happen to be singing in. Move the starting note and every syllable moves with it. This is still how solfège is taught today.

Why absolute frequencies are anachronistic here

There is a second problem, and it is decisive. Assigning a number in hertz to a medieval chant requires two things that did not exist:

So a sentence like "Gregorian chant used 528 Hz" is not merely unproven. It describes a measurement that could not have been made and a standard that did not exist.

Where the numbers actually come from

The nine frequencies entered circulation through Joseph Puleo, a naturopath, and were published in 1999 in Healing Codes for the Biological Apocalypse, which he co-authored with Leonard Horowitz. Puleo described arriving at the numbers by applying a numerological method to verse numbers in chapter 7 of the Book of Numbers.

The method is what is usually called digital root reduction: add the digits of a number, and keep adding until one digit remains. Try it on the list:

Every number in the set reduces to 3, 6 or 9. That pattern is real, and it is presented as evidence that the frequencies are special. But notice what it is a property of: the decimal digits used to write the number down. Write 528 in any other base and the pattern disappears. Digital roots are a fact about our numerals, inherited from the Hindu-Arabic system, not a fact about air pressure oscillating 528 times per second.

The 528 Hz "DNA repair" claim

This is the claim that deserves the most caution, because it is the one people act on. It is usually traced to work attributed to researchers in the 1990s on the effect of audio frequencies on DNA in solution. What is missing is the thing that matters: a published, independently replicated result in the peer-reviewed literature showing that playing a 528 Hz tone repairs DNA in a living organism.

Absence of a replication is not proof that nothing happens. But "no replicated evidence" and "scientifically proven" are very far apart, and the second phrase is the one that appears on the videos.

Apply the control question we use throughout this site: what did the comparison group hear? If a study compares 528 Hz music against silence, the result measures music against silence. To isolate the frequency you need the same piece, same performance, same loudness, shifted in pitch and nothing else — and listeners who cannot tell which version they are getting.

What is actually true about 528 Hz

528 Hz is a perfectly real pitch. In standard concert tuning (A=440), C5 sits at 523.25 Hz, so 528 Hz is about 15.7 cents sharp of C5 — a small but audible difference to a trained ear.

There is a neat detail here that explains a lot of the confusion. If you tune the orchestra to A=444 instead of A=440, C5 lands almost exactly on 528 Hz. That is why 528 and A=444 are so often mentioned together. It is arithmetic, not mysticism: 523.25 × 444 ÷ 440 = 528.0.

How this relates to 432 Hz

It is worth being clear that these are two different systems, and they do not agree with each other. 528 Hz belongs to an A=444 reference. 432 Hz is an A=432 reference. You cannot adopt both at once; a piece tuned so that A is 432 does not contain a 528 Hz C.

People who like both tend to hold them as separate beliefs rather than as one coherent theory. That is a reasonable thing to notice before treating either as established physics.

Where that leaves you

Nothing here says you should not listen to music at 528 Hz, or at any other reference you enjoy. Preferring a slightly different tuning is an ordinary aesthetic choice, and it needs no justification from biology.

What the record does not support is the historical story. The syllables are medieval and relative; the frequencies are modern and absolute; the two were joined together in the late twentieth century. If you want to explore alternative tunings, you are in good company — just not the company you were told about.
