There was no "original" tuning
The most common claim made about A=432 Hz is that it represents an older, more natural tuning that humanity used before the modern standard displaced it. That claim does not survive contact with the historical record â but the real history is considerably more interesting than the myth.
For most of European musical history, pitch was a local matter. It was set by whatever instrument in the room was least able to change: usually the church organ, occasionally a wind instrument. Since organs were built by regional workshops and tuned to regional habits, pitch varied from town to town. Surviving pipes and tuning forks from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century imply reference pitches spanning roughly A=374 Hz to A=567 Hz â a range of well over an octave in the extremes, and commonly a whole tone between neighbouring cities.
A musician travelling between two cities did not adjust to a slightly different tuning. They frequently played in what we would now consider a different key.
What this means in practice
Because there was no fixed reference, there is no coherent sense in which any historical repertoire was "written in" 432 Hz, 440 Hz, or any other value. The frequency of a note is a nineteenth- and twentieth-century concern. Composers before that period specified relationships between notes, not absolute frequencies.
The nineteenth century: pitch inflation
Through the 1800s, orchestral pitch drifted steadily upward. The reasons were practical rather than philosophical. Higher pitch makes string instruments sound brighter and more brilliant, and in an era of growing concert halls and expanding orchestras, brilliance carried. Each orchestra that raised its pitch put pressure on the next to follow.
Singers were the ones who objected. A rising reference pitch progressively raises the tessitura of every written role, and operatic voices â unlike violin strings â cannot simply be tightened. Complaints from the vocal profession are the main reason pitch standardisation became a political question at all.
France legislates: the diapason normal, 1859
The first serious attempt at a fixed standard came from the French government. A commission that included Rossini, Meyerbeer and Berlioz recommended a reference of A=435 Hz, adopted by decree in 1859 and known as the diapason normal. It was the first legally defined concert pitch in Europe, and it was explicitly a compromise â chosen to halt inflation rather than to recover some earlier ideal.
Verdi, Italy, and where 432 actually comes from
This is the part of the story that the modern 432 movement draws on, and it is genuinely documented â though not quite in the form it is usually retold.
Giuseppe Verdi campaigned publicly for lower pitch on behalf of singers. In correspondence in the early 1880s he argued for a reference that would place middle-register writing back within comfortable range, and Italian musical authorities took up the question. An Italian government commission settled on A=432 Hz in 1884. Verdi's own position was pragmatic: he supported the lower Italian figure but indicated he could accept the French 435 for the sake of international agreement, since the difference between them is small.
So "Verdi tuning" is a real historical label with a real basis. What it is not is ancient. It was a nineteenth-century administrative decision, made for the benefit of opera singers, roughly a quarter-century after France had already legislated 435.
1939 and the settlement on 440
International agreement arrived in stages. A conference held in London in 1939 recommended A=440 Hz, and after the interruption of the war the figure was formalised: the International Organization for Standardization published it as ISO 16, first issued in the mid-1950s and revised in 1975. That standard remains in force, and it is why almost every tuner, keyboard and digital audio workstation you will encounter defaults to 440.
440 was not selected for acoustic or symbolic reasons. It was close to where most major orchestras had already converged, it was a round number, and it was politically acceptable to enough national bodies to stick.
The gap is smaller than it sounds
432 Hz sits about 31.8 cents below 440 Hz â just under a third of a semitone. For comparison, the difference between the 1859 French standard (435) and today's 440 is about 20 cents. The 432/440 debate concerns a smaller interval than most listeners assume.
Standardisation was never total
It is worth noting that 440 has never been universally observed. A number of European orchestras, particularly in Germany and Austria, habitually tune to 442 or 443 Hz, and some go higher still. Historically informed performance ensembles routinely use A=415 Hz for baroque repertoire â a full semitone below modern pitch â and A=392 Hz for some French baroque music.
In other words, professional practice already accommodates a range of reference pitches for musical reasons. Choosing 432 places you within a spectrum of legitimate options rather than outside the tradition.
What the history supports, and what it does not
The record supports several things clearly. Pitch was local and variable for centuries. Nineteenth-century inflation was a real problem with real casualties among singers. A=432 Hz was a genuine official standard in Italy in 1884, associated with Verdi's advocacy. Lower pitch has a defensible musical rationale for vocal repertoire.
The record does not support the claim that 432 Hz was an ancient or universal tuning, that it was deliberately suppressed, or that 440 was imposed for reasons other than administrative convergence. Those assertions circulate widely, but they postdate the events they describe and no primary evidence has been produced for them.
None of this settles whether you should prefer the sound of 432. That is a listening question, and it is best answered by listening. But it is worth arriving at that preference through the actual history rather than an invented one.
